Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island (BCBSRI) is now accepting applications for its 2014 BlueAngel Community Health Grant (BACHG) program. This annual program grants funds to nonprofit organizations for initiatives that address access to healthcare, quality of healthcare, and health education, primarily to the uninsured and/or under-insured in Rhode Island.
In recognition of the insurer’s 75th anniversary, the 2014 BACHG program will award three $75,000 grants to organizations that take a holistic, behavior-focused approach to nutrition, physical activity, medical conditions, and long-term lifestyle change for school-aged children in Rhode Island.
“As we celebrate 75 years of service, we want to reinforce our commitment to supporting Rhode Island’s communities the next 75 and beyond,” said Michele Lederberg, chief administrative officer and general counsel for BCBSRI. “With that in mind, we have decided to make 2014 about our future—Rhode Island's children—and in particular, the issue of childhood obesity. By collaborating with organizations that are working to reverse the epidemic of childhood obesity, together we can make a real impact on Rhode Islanders’ health now and for many years to come.”
BCBSRI will consider community-based organizations that provide education and outreach on the importance of good nutrition, physical activity, and healthy weight for children and their families. BCBSRI will also consider Rhode Island organizations who work to increase access to healthy foods for children and their families; support children in increasing physical activity; and, implement and evaluate community health initiatives addressing childhood obesity.
To qualify for a grant, two or more organizations must be working together in collaboration and must have tax-exempt 501(c)(3) status. Applicants can access eligibility requirements, grant program information, frequently asked questions, and the online letter of intent (LOI) form by visiting BCBSRI.com/about-us/community. Organizations must submit their LOI online by 5:00 p.m. on Monday, August 19.
BCBSRI accepts and reviews proposals for the BACHG program once a year. Each LOI received is reviewed to determine compliance with eligibility and funding priorities. BCBSRI will notify the selected applicants and invite submission of a full proposal approximately 30 days before the deadline. Grant award winners are notified in December with funding to begin in January 2014.
