In Rhode Island, payments to hospitals continue to outpace inflation and, as shown in the chart below, this is a national trend.
Nationally, commercial hospital prices increased by 40.5 percent from 2007 through 2011, while the consumer price index, which measures inflation, rose 11.8 percent during this period. That’s a difference of 28.7 percentage points.
To help moderate long-term healthcare costs, Blue Cross is collaborating with local network hospitals to create and implement a Hospital Quality Program.
